John Ridley Directing ABC Documentary About L.A. Rodney King Riots

John Ridley is working on another project for ABC — this time, in the unscripted space.

The “American Crime” creator is writing and directing a feature length documentary about the racial tensions in Los Angeles in the ’80s and early ’90s, pegged to the 25th anniversary of the Rodney King Riots.

The two-hour doc, “Let It Fall: LA 1982-1992,” will air on ABC in spring 2017.

The documentary will begin a decade before the Rodney King Riots and will culminate with the uprising, rioting, looting and gun violence the followed after the Rodney King case verdict. The project will showcase stories of individuals caught up in the tension, featuring interviews with diverse people of all communities that become involved at the time: black, white, Hispanic, Korean, Japanese Americans, plus police commanders, patrolmen and members of city government.

“With many of the films I’ve been a part of, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to take the past and make it present. For me, the documentary space is about allowing people who have lived history to tell their stories in their voices,” said Ridley in a statement. “Unlike many of us, there are some at the center of the Los Angeles uprising who cannot move on from the events of nearly 25 years ago. As we all still live with a number of the same issues that led to the uprising, they still live with a single event. What those individuals recall, and what they survived, urgently needs to be expressed.”

Ridley — known for his his Oscar-winning film “12 Years A Slave,” and his gritty, broadcast anthology series “American Crime,” which returns with its third season next year on ABC — is producing the L.A. doc with ABC News’ Lincoln Square Productions. He will be working with a team of ABC News journalists, including executive producer Jeanmarie Condon.

“John is committed to seeing the humanity in everyone on all sides of this story,” said Condon. “He has a unique way of looking at questions of race and class and conscience. We are all so humbled that the participants have entrusted us with their most personal and emotional memories of this time.”

“Let It Fall: LA 1982-1992” comes at a time of racial tensions across the United States, highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movements and multiple police shootings that have garnered national media attention and controversy. The documentary joins a growing trend of police brutality-centric TV projects, such as Fox’s “Shots Fired,” which will premiere next month at Sundance.

The doc is not Ridley’s only L.A. riots-themed project: he is also directing a film about the 1992 uprising, based on his own script and hailing from Imagine Entertainment.

Scott Foley, Dave Annable to Star in Jeffrey MacDonald True Crime Murder Movie on Investigation Discovery

Investigation Discovery has greenlit a five-part true crime movie series. The first TV film, titled “Final Vision,” will center around the infamous Jeffrey MacDonald murders with Scott Foley starring as the title character.

Foley will portray MacDonald, who was convicted of brutally murdering his pregnant wife and two young daughters in the middle of the night. The television movie will be told through the eyes of bestselling author Joe McGinniss — played by Dave Annable — who was asked by MacDonald to write a book about his “personal nightmare” as he claimed he was flasely accused and was about to go on trial.

The film begins as a story about an innocent man being railroaded by a flawed legal system, then taking viewers through a twisted psychological thriller that exposes a sinister man, behind a charming and heroic façade. In real life, the MacDonald case is the longest-running criminal case in U.S. history.

The MacDonald-centric project is the first of five TV movies, all of which hail from Lincoln Square Productions for Investigation Discovery.

“The story of Jeffrey MacDonald proves the old adage that truth is often stranger than fiction,” said Henry Schleiff, group president of Investigation Discovery, American Heroes Channel, and Destination America. “The MacDonald murders took place more than 30 years ago, and yet the ‘did he or didn’t he’ story still resonates today as a mystifying study of human nature. True crime has never been a more popular than it is now, and we are thrilled that through our partnership with Lincoln Square Productions, we are cementing ID’s place as the home for powerful true-crime storytelling.”

Morgan Hertzan, SVP of Lincoln Square Productions, added: “The terrific team at ID has tapped into an insatiable appetite for real mystery and suspense. We’re proud to be their partners for ‘Final Vision’ and the movies to come. The twists and turns in this drama are a perfect match for America’s fascination with true crime stories. The cast, led by the very talented Scott Foley, tell a riveting story that has only become more mysterious with time.”

“Final Vision” is written by Denis O’Neill and will be directed by Nicholas McCarthy. Executive producers are Christine Connor, Linda Berman and ID’s Angela Bromstad is executive producer. It goes into production this month and will premiere in 2017, though no premiere date has been set.

The film series is the latest true crime project to come to television. The trend kicked off with HBO’s “The Jinx,” which was about Robert Durst, and then was followed by the critically-acclaimed Emmy-winner “The People vs. O.J. Simpson” on FX and CBS’s “The Case Of: JonBenet Ramsey.” Also in the works is NBC’s scripted series about the Menendez brothers, and USA Network’s Tupac/Biggie Smalls pilot “Unsolved,” which is currently in development.

“Scandal” star Foley is repped by ICM Partners, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Jason Sloane. Annable is repped by UTA and manager Sue Leibman of Barking Dog Entertainment.

Investigation Discovery Opens the Vault Once More for a Brand New Season of ‘Barbara Walters Presents’

Pulling from the vault of one of the most legendary journalists of all time, BARBARA WALTERS PRESENTS returns for a second season, revealing exclusive interviews from scandals that captivated the nation. ID and ABC’s Lincoln Square Productions marry gripping interviews from the past and present as Walters leads viewers through three explosive stories: Michael Jackson, Leona Helmsley and Gary Hart. Just as fascinating as the stories themselves, are those that tell them. In all-new interviews, Walters speaks with Tito Jackson, Michael Jackson’s older brother and Jackson 5 bandmate, as well as TJ Jackson, Michael’s nephew and guardian of his children ; Rudy Giuliani, the prosecutor for Leona Helmsley’s “tax cheating;” and Donna Rice, the woman who’s alleged relationship with Gary Hart sparked his political downfall. They—and others—share their thoughts in BARBARA WALTERS PRESENTS premiering on Tuesday, December 6 at 8/7c on Investigation Discovery (ID).

Through careful analysis of the evolving landscape and growing influence of media coverage, BARBARA WALTERS PRESENTS draws conclusions as to why these three fell under public conviction in the height of their careers. Not common in true-crime, Walters examines those who were brought to trial by the press, blurring the line between what is rumor and what is fact. With an unparalleled talent to get to the heart of every story, each hour-long episode relies on Walters’ new and archived interviews as she unravels the humans within them.
