The powerful series features the trials and triumphs from every angle, and includes gripping first person interviews with the people who lived to tell their stories - and those who were instrumental in helping rescue everyone they could. What key decisions did they make to save their lives? “20/20: IN AN INSTANT” continues on SATURDAY, JULY 16th (9:00 – 11:00 pm ET) on the ABC TELEVISION NETWORK.

Episode 5: “Hanging in the Balance”

36-year-old schoolteacher Kelli Groves was driving down California Highway 101 with her two daughters when a truck driver high on methamphetamine drove over her car, crushing it.

The truck driver was killed when his 18-wheeler exploded and plunged into the ravine below. Kelli’s car was left dangling over the guardrail 100 feet above the burning truck and she was alive, along with her daughters, 10-year-old Sage and 10-month-old Mylo.

Nearly the entire event was captured live on TV and on rescue workers’ helmet cameras in some of the most terrifying crash video ever to hit the air. Every time rescuers tried to pry Kelli from the wreck, the car was in danger of falling.

With help from the California Highway Patrol, local Police and Fire, Navy Seabees and civilians, the perilous rescue lasted 2 hours and 21 minutes, but for Kelli, it felt like a lifetime.

Last week “20/20: In an Instant” was Saturday’s most watched TV show with 3.5M Total Viewers, edging out NBC’s “Olympics Trial.”
